What is BASICS?
BASICS stands for Brief Alcohol Screening
and Intervention for College Students.
Goal: Reduce risky behaviors and harmful
consequences of alcohol misuse.
- Designed to assist students in examining their
own behavior.
- BASICS is NOT a "Just Say
No" or abstinence-only program.
- Will provide a judgment free environment that
is positive, inclusive, and empowering.
- BASICS provides an opportunity to assess one’s
own risk.
- Discuss potential changes that could help
reduce the risk for developing future problems.
- We will not release any assessment results or
personal information shared during the BASICS appointment.
- The BASICS Coach is not a licensed counselor.
The Coach offers guidance from an education-based approach.
BASICS – A Two Session Process
Session One:
- 60 minutes in length
- Release of Information form signed and explained
- Confidentiality policy explained
- Timeline of behaviors conducted
- Learn about monitoring behaviors
- Information and motivational advice offered
- e-Checkup process explained
Session Two:
- 60 minutes in length
- Occurs 2 weeks after session one
- Review e-Checkup feedback profile and self-monitoring cards
- Identify potential changes, if appropriate
- Discuss harm reduction strategies for future

- Include your first and last name, ZID, and 3 dates/times when you are available to meet with your BASICS coach.
- You will receive confirmation of your appointment time to your ZID e-mail account.
