Engaged Learning

In our classes, students actively participate in the learning process. Through this engagement, you will develop the critical thinking skills, analytical reading skills, written and verbal communication skills, and knowledge of diversity issues that employers seek.

Examples of engaged learning projects include:

  • Working with a community partner to take action against a problem affecting people because of their sex, gender, or sexuality, such as sexual assault or LGBT awareness for teachers.
  • Creating and presenting a game at NIU's STEMfest, which educates people about women and minorities in STEM fields.
  • Mentoring other students and developing a mentoring portfolio that demonstrates evidence of professional development, networking and facilitation, and leadership.
  • Creating a collaborative art piece that highlights the contributions of women and LGBTQ+ people, and reflects the impact of race, ethnicity, age, social class, sexual orientation, ability, and other factors on women's experiences and the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer+ (LGBTQ+) people.

Our students also complete internships, study abroad, present their work at our student symposium, and publish and present their work at conferences.
