Academics

Whatever your major, there is a study-abroad program that is right for you! It's best to plan ahead so that you know which semester in your college career will be the best for your study-abroad experience, but if you are a senior it's not too late to start. Here are some things you need to know:

  • Programs by major: Here you can find programs for specific majors. This is always being updated, so if you don't see your major, check back or contact the Study Abroad Office.
  • Courses to take on a study-abroad program:
    • Courses in your major - work with the Study Abroad Office and your academic advisor to see which ones will fit into your program
    • Distributive studies ("Gen Ed") courses - for example, one student took COMS 100 in Dubai! (these must be approved by appropriate NIU faculty)
    • Foreign-language courses - you may take these abroad, whether or not they are required for your program
    • Courses "just for fun" - these will still need to be approved, and they will still count toward your GPA
  • If you can't find enough courses you need during a semester program, consider a summer program. Some programs in the summer have just one course required.
