International Student's Requirements for Healthcare Coverage

Why keep the NIU Student Insurance plan?

  • It is convenient and easy to use.
  • Most things at NIU Health Services, including immunizations, are covered 100 percent.
  • Low cost for you, when you see a doctor outside of NIU Health Services.
  • We strongly advise you to keep the NIU insurance for, at least, one semester.
  • Coverage dates: January 1 – July 31, 2018.  Cost is $1,039 (approx. $148 per month).

If you cancel the NIU, Student Insurance plan

  • You will need coverage from at least January 16 to July 31, 2018.
  • Cost will vary depending on the company, student age and the length of coverage.
  • Only the following plans are allowed to cancel the school insurance:

Important Note

You cannot cancel the NIU Student Health Insurance plan once you accept or use our insurance. For example, you cannot get your vaccinations free at Health Services, using our insurance and then try to cancel it.

These plans are not acceptable

  • Any plan that is not Affordable Care Act (ACA) compatible – contact the Student Insurance office for more information
  • Any health insurance plan from your home country
