President BakerBAKER REPORT: IHSA excitement fosters Student Career Success

Last weekend, Northern Illinois University and the City of DeKalb hosted the Illinois High School Association state football championships. Our university and community welcomed more than 30,000 visitors Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving for a football marathon: four championship high school football games each day.

I am pleased to report that the event was a great success, thanks to countless hours of preparation from members of our “communiversity” in DeKalb and at NIU.

IHSA I am most gratified that our students had a “real world” opportunity to gain experience and skills in areas including public relations, marketing, hospitality, social media, photography, game operations, video/graphics and digital scoreboard production and operations. NIU staff from Athletics, Media Services, Media & Public Relations and Marketing & Communications not only devoted their holiday weekend to this historic event but also involved students – mentoring and teaching them at every level of the preparation and execution. Student Career Success in action!

This is just one example of NIU students gaining valuable “real world” experience right here on campus.

NIU students are employed across the university in academic and operational departments and divisions, earning money to help pay for school while learning valuable career success lessons such as working in a diverse environment, meeting deadlines, accountability and, of course, technical skills. All these great experiences position our students for bold futures in their careers and in life.

Tonight promises another great experience for our entire community as our Huskie football team competes for its third straight MAC Championship in Detroit. I look forward to seeing you there, and if you can’t make it in person, I hope you plan to watch the game on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. CT.
