Student of the Semester: Fall 2012

RichardsSusan (Susie) Richard

Major: Political Science

Minor: Marketing

Anticipated Graduation Date: May 2014

What is your major and why did you choose it? I choose political science as my major, because I believe that it will prepare me for law school once I graduate. I have always wanted to attend law school and I knew that it would guide me in the right direction. Marketing is my minor mainly based off of the fact that I am very interested in exactly how products are advertised and sold to consumers in today’s world.

What activities or organization are you currently involved in? I Currently, I am involved in Sigma Kappa Sorority, Mortar Board Senior Honor Society, the University Honors Program, peer instructing for UNIV 101, and serving as the Director of Greek Affairs for the Student Association.

Please list some of the awards and achievements that you have been recognized for? I was awarded the Kevin D. Knight Sophomore and Junior Leadership Awards, and the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges Award.

Why did you choose to come to NIU? I choose to come to NIU, because I really liked the campus and what it had to offer. I did not want to attend a very large school and NIU was the perfect size school for me.

Please tell us your favorite thing about NIU? My favorite thing about NIU is that there are so many different ways to get involved. I feel as though everyone has a place here on campus and it is not very hard to find it. As long as you are willing to put in the time, you will gain many positive experiences here at NIU.

How do you define success? Overall, success is ultimately based on how much time and effort you put forth. I believe that the harder you work on a specific task the more successful you will be in the long run. Therefore, always working your hardest in everything you do, and you will most likely succeed.

Can you think of an NIU Staff member who has helped you in your success at NIU and why? The NIU Staff member who has helped me become successful at NIU is Randi Napientek. During my freshman year she taught me how to not only be a successful student, but she helped my peers and I discover what NIU is really all about. She helped me navigate all paths that I have come across on campus the last few years and I truly believe that she helped me transform into a more successful student here at NIU from my very first day.

What is an obstacle or situation you had to overcome that you believe made you a better student? An obstacle that I constantly have to overcome is managing my time. If I do not manage my time well throughout the semester, I feel as though I would not be a very successful student.

Do you have any advice for other NIU students on how to be successful? In order to be successful at NIU find something that you really enjoy doing and put your energy towards that outside of the classroom. It is important to continue participating in things that you like to do, this is also a great way to meet friends.
