Student attendance is the number one predictor of student success. Because of this, the Office of the Provost and the Office of Student Academic Success (OSAS) wants to reduce student failure due to absences. The plan is to catch attendance problems not only early on, but throughout the course of the semester.
After the second week of class, instructors are asked to provide students' names (and zID if available) of individuals who have already missed courses. The instructor's College Student Success Specialist (SSS) will work to contact the student and address the absence issue. The SSS will also follow-up with the referring instructor regarding the outcome(s) of the referral. Instructors are also encouraged to continue to contact their SSS throughout the semester if you have students whose attendance is problematic (e.g. a student misses two classes in a row or shows signs of attendance problems).
