DeKalb, Ill.--The Northern Illinois University College of Law hosted its 24th annual Francis X. Riley Lecture on Professionalism on Friday, April 7 in the Francis X. Riley Courtroom. Illinois Senator Toi Hutchinson (’14) presented “Professionalism and Ethics for Lawyers in Elected Office in the Age of Alternative Facts,” which centered on maintaining the integrity of the legal profession, especially for attorneys running or serving in public office.

Senator Hutchinson, who is a Northern Law alumna from the class of 2014, drew from her own experiences as an elected official.  She has represented the 40th District of Illinois since 2009. She currently serves as chairwoman of the Senate Revenue Committee and is a member of numerous other committees including Commerce and Economic Development, Government Reform, Public Health and the Judiciary. During her lecture Senator Hutchinson discussed a number of issues, including the standards that lawyers should adhere to in order to be successful in the political arena in a partisan age; the threat that “alternative facts” have on our democracy; and holding attorneys accountable for their actions.

The Francis X. Riley Lecture on Professionalism was established in 1994 to honor the late Professor Emeritus Riley, who devoted his life to the law and legal education. The lecture series brings distinguished speakers to the Northern Illinois University College of Law to discuss current ethical issues relating to the legal profession.
