NIU Law Hosts Foreclosure Mediation Training with
Sixteenth Judicial Circuit Court

DeKalb, Ill.--On December 3, 2014, the NIU College of Law hosted a Foreclosure Mediation Training Seminar with the Illinois Sixteenth Judicial Circuit Court at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles, IL. The seminar discussed current issues in the residential mortgage foreclosure mediation from the perspective of the courts, plaintiffs’ counsel, defense counsel, and the mediator.

The Honorable Christine Downs, Presiding Judge, Foreclosure, Sixteenth Judicial Circuit, opened the seminar with a discussion of the impact of foreclosure mediation on the court. Michelle R. Ratledge, lead attorney in Foreclosure Sales at Codilis and Associates, P.C., and Christopher Weldon, associate counsel at Freedman Anselmo Lindberg LLC, discussed the road to mediation and making the most of the mediation session from the plaintiff’s perspective. Jennifer Luczkowiak, project director of the Legal Help for Homeowners Project at Prairie State Legal Services, Inc., presented on the legal issues for represented and unrepresented homeowners in foreclosure. Erika Chavez, housing counselor at Neighborhood Housing Services, explained the HUD-certified housing counseling resources available to homeowners in foreclosure. Professor Alan H. Boudreau, visiting assistant clinical professor and director of the Foreclosure Mediation Clinic at NIU College of Law, presented on navigating the mediator’s  role in balancing power and maintaining neutrality, while managing an effective mediation session.

The NIU College of Law has been a program partner in the Kane County Residential Foreclosure Mediation Program since its inception. Students in the NIU Foreclosure Mediation Clinic represent Kane County homeowners participating in the Foreclosure Mediation Program. The Foreclosure Mediation Clinic is generously funded as part of a joint grant to NIU Law and Resolution Systems Institute from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.
