Professor Widman Presents Consumer Protection Paper at Marquette University

Professor Amy Widman will present "Strategies of Public UDAP Enforcement" at Marquette University Law School on February 21, 2017. This article, co-authored with Professor Prentiss Cox of the University of Minnesota and Professor Mark Totten from Michigan State University, presents the initial results of the first empirical study of public unfair, deceptive or abusive acts or practices (UDAP) enforcement across state and federal government.

Professor Widman previously presented the article at University of Minnesota Law School on January 19, 2017.

Professor Widman Presents Article on Consumer Protection Laws

Professor Amy Widman presented a work in progress, "Strategies of Public UDAP Enforcement," at University of Minnesota Law School on January 19, 2017. This article, co-authored with Professor Prentiss Cox of the University of Minnesota and Professor Mark Totten from Michigan State University, presents the initial results of the first empirical study of public unfair, deceptive or abusive acts or practices (UDAP) enforcement across state and federal government.

The article examines every UDAP matter resolved by state and federal enforcers in 2014. Across a range of attributes, UDAP enforcement by state and federal actors varies while also revealing clear patterns. The authors organize the data to show how groups of enforcers employ distinct enforcement strategies. The picture that emerges is intended to ground scholarship on public UDAP enforcement and help optimize the conduct of public enforcers.

Professor Widman Presents Paper at Legal Conference

On Saturday, May 31st, Professor Amy Widman presented a paper at the Annual Meeting of Law & Society in Minneapolis.  The paper was entitled "Accountability and Independence as an Inter-Branch Dialogue: The Relationship between State Legislatures and State Judiciaries on Matters of Statutory Interpretation and Methods of Judicial Selection."

Professor Widman to Judge Prestigious Writing Competition

Professor Amy Widman has been selected as a judge for the 7th annual Richard D. Cudahy Writing Competition on Regulatory and Administrative Law by the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy.  Winners of the competition are selected in both the lawyer and student categories.  The winning papers will receive special recognition at the ACS National Convention as well as on the ACS website.

Professor Amy Widman presented on a panel at the Progressive Federalism Conference at Chicago-Kent College of Law on Saturday, September 7, 2013.

Professor Widman Writes Guest Column for Chicago Daily Law Bulletin

Professor Amy Widman was featured as a guest columnist in the August 28, 2013 edition of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin.  Professor Widman wrote about the Supreme Court Ethics Act of 2013, which was proposed earlier in August 2013.

Professor Widman Quoted in Reuters Article

Professor Amy Widman was quoted in a May 28, 2013 article for Reuters news service written by Alison Frankel.  The article deals with the hiring of contingency-free attorneys on behalf of consumers by state attorneys general.  Professor Widman was consulted by the author due to her expertise with matters of attorneys general enforcing consumer protection, the same issue about which she testified to the U.S. Congress in 2012.

Professor Widman Debuts as Guest Columnist in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin

Professor Amy Widman penned her first column for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin in the publication's Thursday, May 23, 2013 edition.  In her piece, Professor Widman discusses statutory interpretation and the Class Action Fairness Act of 2005 in light of a recent petition to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Professor Widman to Speak at Consortium

Professor Amy Widman will be speaking to law students at the Chicago Area Law School Consortium's Practice Tracks program on Thursday, February 21, 2013. The Consortium includes all nine Illinois law schools plus Valparaiso and Notre Dame Law Schools from Indiana. Although all law students are invited, the focus is on first-year students. Practitioners from more than 50 different fields are invited so that law students can talk with any of the practitioners in the fields that interest them. The program attracts between 200 and 300 students.

Professor Widman Interviewed for Online Legal Article

Professor Amy Widman was quoted in a recent article by Alison Frankel of the Thompson-Reuters news service.  The article dealt with the use of private attorneys by state Attorneys General, and Professor Widman was consulted due to her expertise in that area and her recent congressional testimony on the matter.

Professor Widman Presents at Colloquium

Professor Amy Widman presented at the third annual Loyola Constitutional Law Colloquium on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. in room 1304 of the Loyola University Chicago School of Law. The title of her presentation was "The Rostrum Principle of Statutory Interpretation" and it was based on an upcoming article from Professor Widman.
