Current Awareness Services

Many of the Law Library's databases and online publications, as well as many freely available Web sites, have alerting/current awareness services. The information below will inform you about some services available to you and how to subscribe to and unsubscribe from them.

Also feel free to ask for assistance from any of the librarians on which services to use and how to set them up. (Please note: some services are restricted to the students, faculty and/or staff of the College of Law.)

New legal journals, law reviews and other publications:

HeinOnline Email Alerts (beta) email icon

  • Description: sends an e-mail when a journal issue or volume is added to the Hein Online Law Journal Library. Note: as of May 2011 this service has been renamed "eTOC alerts" and will include tables of contents of the journals with links to the articles within HeinOnline.
  • To subscribe:
    • Log in to your MyHein account before attempting to set up a title alert. (See http://heinonline.org/HeinDocs/MyHeinUsersGuide.pdf for how to set up a MyHein account).
    • Within the selected Hein library (for example, the Law Journal Library), browse to the desired publication. Click on the "Create Email Alert (beta)" link next to the publication title. The message [Journal name] has been saved under tag "Title Alerts" will display.
    • To view all Title Alerts you have set up, click on the Title Alerts (beta) link in the left-hand MyHein column.
  • To unsubscribe:
    • Log in to your MyHein account and click Title Alerts (beta) in the left hand column.
    • Click the Delete link beneath each title. To delete multiple titles, place a checkmark next to the title(s) to be deleted, then click Delete Selected Entries.

IntelliConnect (CCH/Wolters-Kluwer) email icon RSS feed

  • Tracker News:
    • Description: used to monitor news and developments related to a particular topic.  Updates can be sent daily via email or as an RSS feed and can also be viewed within Intelliconnect.
    • To subscribe: 
      • In the Quick Bar area in the upper left hand corner, click on "Tracker News." Click the word "here" in the "You have no Trackers configured..." message.
      • In the right hand column, select the Tracker(s) you want to add.
      • Some Trackers have additional customization options. To view them, click on the Target icon next to the name of the Tracker. When finished with additional customizations, click OK.
      • Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Add Trackers."
      • A window will display asking if you want to receive Tracker News via e-mail. An RSS feed link is also provided that enables you to receive all of your Trackers in one RSS feed.

    • To unsubscribe or edit:
      • In the Quick Bar area in the upper left hand corner, click on "Tracker News." Click "Add/Modify Trackers."
      • To delete a Tracker, click the X next to its name. To modify a Tracker, click the target icon next to its name.
      • To modify your delivery options (e-mail address, etc.) click the "Delivery Options" link at the top of the right hand pane.   
  • Report Letters:
    • Description: enables subscribers to have report letters e-mailed to them or sent via RSS feed.
    • To subscribe: In the Quick Bar in the upper left hand corner, click on "Tracker News" then click on "Receive Entire Report Letter(s)." You will see a list of CCH report letters associated with the titles to which the library subscribes. (Video - restricted to students, faculty & staff of the College of Law)
    • To receive updates via e-mail: select the titles you want to receive in the right hand column, make sure the "Deliver my report letters to the email address above" is checked in the left hand column. If you have made any changes to the e-mail address of "Delivery" box, also click "Apply Changes."
      • To unsubscribe from updates via e-mail: In the Quick Bar in the upper left hand corner, click on "Tracker News" then click on "Receive Entire Report Letter(s)." In the left hand box that displays, click the "X" next to the titles you no longer wish to receive.
    • To receive updates via RSS feed: click the link "Click here to view available RSS Feeds" and add them to your feed reader.
    • To unsubscribe from an RSS feed: remove the feed from your feed reader.

Legal Scholarship Network (SSRN) email icon

  • Description: The College of Law has full access to materials within the Legal Scholarship Network portion of SSRN. Access to the free journals within other networks is also available.  Current awareness material is delivered to your e-mail and consists of references to recently added articles/publications that meet your alert specifications.
  • To subscribe:
    • Go to www.ssrn.com and log in.
    • Select the Subscriptions link on the left side of the page. You are brought to the Journal Subscription Manager.
    • Scroll down to "Legal Scholarship Network" and select Click here. You are directed to a list of available materials.
    • Use the +/- buttons at the top level to subscribe / unsubscribe to all journals in a section. Click Expand All to see all journals within a topic area, then use the check boxes to select individual titles.
  • To unsubscribe: return to the Journal Subscription Manager and un-check the the selections you made. Each e-mail update you receive also contains an "unsubscribe" link.

  • SmartCILP email icon

    • Description: weekly e-mail service drawn from topic and subject headings and journal titles covered by the Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP). Direct links to publications in LexisNexis or Westlaw are provided.
    • To subscribe:
      • Go to http://depts.washington.edu/scilp/scilp3.cgi. Fill in requested personal information & enter the NIU authorization code (obtain the code from the law library).
      • Select the topic, subject and/or specific journal titles of interest (there are three different sections to the signup form). 
      • When finished, click the Next button at the bottom of any of the sections to submit the profile.
    • To unsubscribe or edit: log into your profile at the URL above and modify your selections. (If you wish to unsubscribe from everything leave all checkmarks blank.) This will overlay your previous settings.  

    New books at the NIU Law Library  RSS feed

    • Description: monthly RSS feed of publications added to the collection the previous month.
    • To subscribe: add http://www.librarything.com/rss/recent/niulawlib to your feed reader or RSS-to-email service.
    • To unsubscribe: remove the feed from your feed reader or RSS-to-email service.

     


    Database alerting services:

    LegalTrac email icon RSS feed

    • Description: Allows you to create a search alert to be notified by either email or RSS when new material matching your search criteria has been added to the database.
    • To subscribe: After running a search in LegalTrac, click the "Create a Search Alert" link on the upper right hand corner of the results screen. 
      • To receive results via e-mail, enter your e-mail address and select how often to receive updates (daily, weekly or monthly).
      • To receive updates via RSS, copy and paste the provided RSS feed URL into your feed reader.
    • To unsubscribe: 
      • When you set up a search alert by e-mail, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with an un-subscribe link in it. Save this e-mail as it contains a direct link to that search. Clicking on the link in the e-mail will delete the search alert.
      • To unsubscribe from a search alert via RSS, remove the feed from your feed reader.

    LEXIS Alerts: email icon

    • Description: LEXIS alerts can be used to keep up-to-date on information found in virtually every Lexis database, as well as Shepard’s.  Searches are saved and run at prescribed intervals.  You are then notified of the results in the manner selected when the alert is set up.  Methods of receiving information include having it sent to the Lexis printer, documents sent to your e-mail, or a cite list sent to your e-mail. Alerts can be set up on most searches (e.g., Shepard’s reports, dockets, case law, statutes, law reviews) but cannot be done when in Book Browse or on Natural Language searches.
    • To subscribe:
      • Sign into Lexis
      • Run a search. Once the search results are retrieved, click the “Save as Alert” link in at the top of the results screen.
      • Fill in the form to your specifications, including frequency and delivery format (to printer / via e-mail / online access only).
      • Use e-mail notification to know when new material has been added.
    • To unsubscribe or edit:
      • Select the Alerts tab in the top center of the screen. All currently running alerts are listed.
      • Use "edit" and "delete" links provided for each search.
    • Notes: a video tutorial is also available on setting up LEXIS alerts.

    Westlaw Westclip:

    • Westlaw alerts can be used to keep up-to-date on information found in virtually every Westlaw database, as well as Keycite.  Searches are saved and run at prescribed intervals.  You are then notified of the results in the manner selected when the alert is set up.  Methods of receiving information include having it sent to the Westlaw printer, documents sent to your e-mail, or a cite list sent to your e-mail, among others.
    • Alerts can be set up on most searches (e.g., KeyCite  reports, dockets, case law, statutes, law reviews, etc.). Check the "Alert Center" link (upper right hand corner on the Westlaw home page) for descriptions of the types of alerts available. Alerts can also be created directly from the Alert Center.
      Note: WestlawNext currently directs users back to Westlaw.com for Alerts.
    • To subscribe:
    • To unsubscribe or edit:
      • Select the "Alert Center" link on the top right hand portion of the screen.
      • Open the appropriate alert group (e.g., Westclip, Keycite Alert etc.).
      • To edit the search, select the name of the saved search.
      • To delete the search, check the box in front of the search and click the Delete button at the top of the list.


     

    Court filings, judicial opinions and regulations alerting services:

    Seventh Circuit RSS feed

    • Description: The Seventh Circuit offers updates and access to newly released opinions and oral arguments through RSS.
    • To subscribe:
      • Go to http://www.ca7.uscourts.gov/ca7_rss.htm
      • For Opinions: select the RSS icon and paste the URL into your RSS reader of choice.
      • For Oral Argument Podcasts: For standard podcasts use the RSS Podcast icon; for i-Tunes use the iTunes Enhanced icon.
    • To unsubscribe: remove the feed from your feed reader or RSS-to-email service.

    Illinois Courts email icon  Twitter logo

    • Description: Updates on court rules, jury instructions, dockets, opinions and more can be received from the Illinois Supreme Court and other Illinois Courts.  
    • To subscribe:
      • Go to: http://www.state.il.us/court/General/listservices.asp 
      • For Twitter updates, click on the Twitter link near the top of the page. (The Twitter updates cover updates for all courts.)
      • For e-mail updates, select the area of interest and click the "subscribe" button. Important: retain the confirmation e-mail you will receive, as it contains information on how to un-subscribe.
    • To unsubscribe:
      • For e-mail updates, return to http://www.state.il.us/court/General/listservices.asp or check the confirmation e-mail you received when you signed up, which contains information on how to unsubscribe.
      • For Twitter updates: un-follow "illinoiscourts" in your Twitter account.
