DeKalb, Ill.--Northern Illinois University College of Law held its final lecture of the semester as part of its Murer Lecture Series on Professionalism on March 27, 2013. Chair of the NIU Board of Trustees Cherilyn G. Murer (’78) delivered the closing lecture, “Professionalism and the Veracity of Language: Saying the Right Thing in an Ever-Changing Environment.” Murer is also one of the series’ major sponsors. Her talk, given to first-year NIU Law students, focused on best practices in ethics and avoiding pitfalls drawn from her years of experience. Her presentation focused on the importance of precision in the use of language within an ever-changing and ambiguous legal environment.

Murer is President and CEO of Murer Consultants, Inc., a legal-based healthcare management consulting firm founded in 1985. During her lecture, Murer focused on the legal and ethical dilemmas posed by ambiguous language in policies, procedures, and regulations. Murer discussed the complicated choices in language and interpretations of that language that must be made by legal professionals and the importance of communicating these choices to clients. Murer’s directives to the students were to embrace the changes and ambiguity in the legal environment and to lead boldly with a strong moral compass.

Following the presentation, students joined Murer and other distinguished guests to “Continue the Conversation” over dinner. Students were encouraged to further explore the message of the presentation and how to apply it past, current, and even future experiences.

The Murer Lecture Series on Professionalism is funded through the generosity of Cherilyn and Michael Murer, who announced their continued support of the program with a third year of funding for the lecture series. The program will continue to integrate professionalism into the law school curriculum and feature nationally recognized legal practitioners and scholars discussing cutting-edge issues.
