DeKalb, Ill.-- Northern Illinois University College of Law is pleased to announce that Cherilyn Murer (’78), President and CEO of Murer Consultants, Inc., will present the 18th Annual Francis X. Riley Lecture on Professionalism on Friday, April 1 at 3 p.m. Ms. Murer will present her lecture in the Francis X. Riley Courtroom at the Northern Illinois University College of Law, Swen Parson Hall in DeKalb.
Ms. Murer's lecture entitled, “Recalibrating the Compass --- Amorality and the Ethics of Nonfeasance,” will focus on the essence of leadership, accountability, and social responsibility in the study and practice of law and how this can help effect needed reform in other industries including banking, healthcare, and education.
Over the last 25 years, Ms. Murer has distinguished herself as an active voice in the advancement of quality, cost-effective healthcare. Founded in 1985, Murer Consultants is a legal-based healthcare management consulting firm that offers a wide range of consultative services, including the design and development of health facilities, regulatory compliance oversight, and reimbursement analysis for all venues of care. Murer Consultants has established relationships with more than 600 clients in 42 U.S. states and a number of foreign nations, including Canada, the Netherlands and Belgium.
Ms. Murer has served on the Board of Trustees of Northern Illinois University since 2005. She chaired the NIU Board from 2007 to 2009. In February 2010, Ms. Murer was inducted into the Chicago Area Entrepreneurial Hall of Fame; and in April 2010, she received the Northern Illinois University Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award. Ms. Murer received a juris doctor degree with honors from the Northern Illinois University College of Law and has coupled her background in law with her previous operational experience as the Director of Rehabilitation Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. In addition, Ms. Murer has co-authored five books on a variety of healthcare topics, including effective case management, post-acute care reimbursement, provider-based status, compliance audits and medical records management. A sixth book, The Case Management Workbook – Defining the Role of Physicians, Nurses and Case Managers, will be published in Spring 2011.
The Francis X. Riley Lecture on Professionalism was established in 1994 to honor Professor Emeritus Riley, who devoted his life to the law and legal education. The lecture series brings distinguished speakers to the Northern Illinois University College of Law to discuss current issues relating to the legal profession. Professor Riley passed away on September 14, 2006. He was 93. This Lecture Series continues to serve as part of his legacy at the College of Law and within the legal community.
There will be a reception following the lecture. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public. 1 hour of MCLE ethics credit will be given for this lecture. Attendees are also invited to stay and join us for our annual Public Interest Law Society Auction.
