DeKalb, Ill. – In a room filled with anticipation and a mix of emotions, the Class of 2012 began their law school experience on August 10th with a week of orientation. Designed as a means of introducing students to the essential skills needed to succeed in law school, orientation allowed students to take part in tasks ranging from simply receiving locker assignments to taking the more meaningful Oath of Professionalism.
In addition to meeting their new classmates, the incoming students will be the first class to enter the law school under new Dean Jennifer Rosato, who began her tenure at NIU Law on July 1st. Dean Rosato’s warm welcome to the class put them at ease as she quickly challenged the students to “find their passion” during their years at NIU Law.
Illinois Supreme Court Justice Thomas L. Kilbride was a featured speaker as he addressed the students on, “Professionalism in the Practice of Law” and then administered the Oath of Professionalism. Judge Kilbride reminded students on how vital it is that they maintain their integrity, and he challenged them to remain committed to the right decision even if it was not the popular one. Following his remarks, students participated in a workshop on professionalism and ethics facilitated by attorneys active in professionalism issues.
Orientation week also included a number of valuable networking exercises and opportunities. After a discussion on the importance of career networking, students enjoyed a game of Mingle Bingo where they learned more about each other, the faculty, and staff members. Students were also taken to the Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic in Rockford for a reception. Once there, they were welcomed by a number of alumni and members of the Rockford community including judges, state’s attorneys, public defenders, sole practitioners, and lawyers in local firms.
As the week of introductions, case discussions, mock exams and events came to an end, it was evident that orientation had given the first-year students an experience that allowed them the benefit of easing into their new learning environment. Although designed to give them an insight into the law school experience, most found the greatest insight realized during the orientation process was that they were right where they belong.
