NIU Law Alumna Cherilyn Murer Elected Chair of NIU Governing Board
September 07, 2007
DeKalb, Ill. – Northern Illinois University College of Law is pleased to announce that alumna Cherilyn G. Murer has been elected chair of the NIU Board of Trustees. Established in January 1996, by an act of the Illinois General Assembly, the Board of Trustees is an independent governing board that is charged with overseeing and determining policies for the university.
Murer, a resident of Homer Glen, is president and CEO of The Murer Group, a legal-based healthcare consulting company headquartered in Joliet. The firm represents hospitals and health systems throughout the United States, providing strategic planning services and assistance in complying with complex state and federal regulations. She also has published five books on healthcare management and legal compliance issues.
Appointed to the NIU Board of Trustees in 2005 by Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, Murer has served as vice chair, chair of the academic affairs committee, and head of a board subcommittee overseeing development of NIU’s new proton therapy treatment and research institute at the DuPage National Technology Park in West Chicago. She is also a member of the NIU Foundation Board of Directors, and has chaired that group’s development committee.
Murer graduated from NIU Law in 1978 and has served on its Board of Visitors since 2002. In 2003, she was named the NIU Alumni Association’s Outstanding College Alumni Award recipient for the College of Law.
“Supporting my university is a labor of love,” Murer said, “and my goals reflect that feeling. I’d like to see my tenure as chair marked by a renewed emphasis on academic excellence, support for research and artistry, and increased recognition of NIU as a center of excellence and opportunity for talented students and faculty.”
Murer’s term as chair began July 1.

The only public law school in the greater Chicago area, NIU Law has previously been ranked first in the nation for government placement, according to U.S. News and World Report. Nearly one-third of its graduates choose a career in public interest, including more than 50 alumni in the judiciary -- a remarkable accomplishment for a law school with less than 3,000 graduates. In honor of its commitment to public service, NIU Law received the 2001 Excellence in Pro Bono and Public Interest Service Award.
