NIU Law Professor to Present at International Conference on Theory, Culture, and Law in Columbia

May 15, 2006

DeKalb-- Northern Illinois University College of Law Associate Professor Elvia R. Arriola will present at the 2006 South-North Exchange on Theory, Culture and Law (SNX) on May 20 at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Columbia. "This conference brings together scholars from around the world who engage in open and critical dialogue on the philosophies and impacts of the global market and capitalism on society," Arriola explained.

This year's topic is Free-Market Fundamentalism: A Critical Review of Dogmas and Consequences. Arriola will serve on the panel, "Manifestations of the Market IV: Gender," where she will discuss her proposed article, Gendered Violence at Work: Imagining a Corporate Zone of Accountability for the Element of Fatal Indifference in the Maquiladora Murders at the Mexican Border. After the conference, Arriola will finish her article based on the live proceedings, which will be published in a scholarly journal.

Professor Arriola joined NIU Law in 2001 and teaches Constitutional Law, Gender and the Law, Civil Rights Litigation, Federal Courts and a research seminar, Women, Law and the Global Economy.

Her current interests focus on labor abuses and working conditions in factories owned by multinational corporations at the Mexican border known as maquiladoras. In October 2005, Arriola led NIU Law's first student delegation to the Mexico-U.S. border to meet directly with maquiladora workers. She attained her law degree from the University of California-Berkeley School of Law and her master's degree in history from New York University.

The South-North Exchange, a Project of LatCrit, Inc. (Latina/Latino Critical Legal Theory Conference), is a joint production of the Georgia State University College of Law, Seattle University School of Law, University of Miami School of Law, Center for Hispanic & Caribbean Legal Studies, and Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de los Andes.
