Diann Marsalek (’89) was recently honored as the 2004 Outstanding Alumna of the NIU College of Law. Diann is Chief Legal Counsel for the Illinois Department of Corrections, appointed by Gov. Blagojevich in 2003. She is responsible for reviewing all litigation for an agency of 13,000 employees and 44,000 inmates. Presently, her office has 7,000 cases pending in all levels of the judicial system.
Each year, NIU recognizes outstanding individuals who have achieved great success in their personal and professional lives. Regina Harris (’89), Kane County Public Defender & President of the NIU College of Law Alumni Council nominated Diann for this prestigious award. According to Harris, “She's been the perfect ambassador for the College to other members of the bar, to decision makers in Springfield and to the public. To me, it's a wonderful thing that there are a lot of people out there who, when they hear NIU College of Law, will think of Diann Marsalek and make the connection between this incredible woman and our school.”
Despite her demanding schedule, Diann still makes time for her alma mater. She was a member of the NIU College of Law’s Alumni Council, where she also served as its secretary. Prior to the Awards dinner, Diann came to the law school for a reception in her honor where she was greeted by over fifty law students and staff members.
Diann received her award in the presence of her father, Hon. Edward Marsalek, former Circuit Court judge, her mother, a former school teacher, and several of her law school classmates. Dean LeRoy Pernell, also present at the Awards dinner said, “Diann Marsalek’s outstanding record of achievement is an excellent example of the extraordinary accomplishments of the graduates of the NIU College of Law. Her dedication to leadership and commitment to public service is one of our best illustrations of the type of lawyer we encourage our students to become.”
