Professor Boudreau Trains Foreclosure Mediators Across Illinois
Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor Alan Boudreau recently trained mediators for Champaign County's new foreclosure mediation program. Professor Boudreau has now trained foreclosure mediators in the Circuit Courts of Illinois for the 6th, 17th, 19th and 20th Judicial Circuits. The training is provided as part of a joint grant to the NIU College of Law and Resolutions Systems Institute to assist Illinois counties establishing foreclosure mediation programs. Professor Boudreau directs the NIU College of Law Foreclosure Mediation Clinic, in which law students provide representation to homeowners in foreclosure mediation in the 16th Judicial Circuit Court in Kane County, Illinois.
NIU Law Clinical Faculty Present at the Midwest Clinic Teachers’ Conference
On September 13, 2014, the NIU Law Clinical Faculty (Professors Anita Maddali, Paul Cain, Wendy Vaughn, Alan Boudreau and Colleen Boraca) presented at the Midwest Clinic Teachers’ Conference at Michigan State University College of Law. The presentation, Community Lawyering: Looking Beyond your Backyard to Make a Difference, examined the role of community partnerships in developing and expanding clinical opportunities for law students. Faculty members shared how NIU’s legal clinics are working with various community partners to make a difference in multiple communities throughout northern Illinois.
Professor Boudreau to Moderate ABA Panel on Mediation Ethics
Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor Alan Boudreau will be moderating a panel on mediation ethics at the American Bar Association Annual Meeting in Boston on August 8, 2014. The panel of nationally known alternative dispute resolution experts is entitled "Finding the Balance: Ethical Dilemmas in Family and Business Mediation." Professor Boudreau serves as the Chair of the ABA Family Law Section's Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee.

Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor Alan Boudreau was quoted in a June 2014 article appearing in USA Today. The article is called "More dads demand equal custody rights." Professor Boudreau offers his insights on the societal changes that are leading more fathers to be actively involved in raising their children before and after divorce.
Professor Boudreau Speaks at ABA Conference
Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor Alan Boudreau presented at the American Bar Association Spring 2014 Family Law Conference on recent trends in parentage law. The presentation, entitled "Are You My Mommy? Determining Parentage in Modern Families," examined the rapid changes occurring in contemporary American families and the struggles courts face in applying current parentage law to these modern families.
Professor Boudreau Gives Keynote Presentation at LGBT Training Program
Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor Alan Boudreau served as a keynote presenter at the LGBT Training for Counselors program co-sponsored by the NIU Counseling Association and Chi Sigma Iota. The program combined counseling and legal perspectives on creating an LGBT-affirming counseling setting. Professor Boudreau spoke on the impact of explicit and implicit LGBT bias on counseling clients, the evolving legal issues facing LGBT clients, and the ways that counselors can design their practices to improve service and safety for LGBT clients. The program also provided Continuing Education Units for licensed counselors.
Professor Boudreau Quoted in Bloomberg BNA Family Law Reporter on Mediation Confidentiality
Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor Alan Boudreau was cited in a recent article in the Bloomberg BNA Family Law Reporter, published in April 2014. The article is called "Evidence of Conduct During Mediation Is Inadmissible in Grandparent Visitation Case" and in it, Professor Boudreau offers his insights on the importance of confidentiality in family mediation.
Professor Boudreau Speaks at the Chicago Bar Association on Drafting ADR Agreements
On December 11, 2013, Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor Alan Boudreau presented to the Chicago Bar Association's Business Law - Documentation Best Practices Subcommittee on negotiating and drafting mediation and arbitration agreements. The panel focused on how appropriate alternative dispute resolution mechanisms can prevent a beneficial business arrangement from devolving into a litigation problem. Professor Boudreau discussed issues that often lead to contractual disputes, and provided guidance on how to draft mediation and arbitration agreements that meet client needs when conflict does arise.
Professor Alan Boudreau Presents on Mediation Advocacy to Prairie State Legal Services
On October 7, 2013, Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor Alan Boudreau spoke on "Advocating for Clients in Mediation" at Prairie State Legal Services. Professor Boudreau's in-house professional development program provided an overview of mediation as it is practiced in Illinois and then focused on mediation advocacy skills to help clients achieve their mediation goals. As foreclosure mediation is expanding around Illinois, the Foreclosure Mediation Clinic at the College of Law and Prairie State Legal Services have been working together to provide additional legal resources to struggling homeowners.
