About Jazmin: I am married and have two boys (one of whom was only 3 weeks old when I started law school). I live in Davenport, Iowa and commute to the NIU College of Law on a regular basis. I enjoy modeling and drag racing during my spare time, although currently my time is limited as I balance the rigorous demands of law school with the responsibilities of being a parent and wife.
Previous Legal and/or Professional Experience: This past summer, I was an intern at the Rock Island County State’s Attorney’s Office, where I assisted prosecutors with research and wrote legal memorandums. I also handled walk-in complaints for the office and assisted in the preparation of preliminary hearings. Prior to attending law school, I held a managerial position with a used car dealership that specialized in special in-house financing.
What activities are you involved in on campus? Currently I work for the Office of Admissions & Financial Aid at Northern Illinois University College of Law as a Special Assistant to the Director of Admissions. I further the recruiting efforts by hosting special open house and class visit days. I also meet individually with prospective students and provide guidance about the law school admissions process. I am Vice President of the Latino/a Law Student Association, and I will represent the NIU College of Law at the National LLSA Moot Court Competition in New Orleans this year. I am involved with several on-campus organizations, including the Women’s Law Caucus, the Black Law Student Association, the Public Interest Law Society, and the Student Bar Association. I am also a student member of the American Bar Association. I enjoy volunteering whenever I get a chance. I feel that it is important to give back to the community and to donate to good causes.
What do you like most about being at NIU Law? I absolutely love the fact that NIU College of Law is committed to providing students with an affordable quality education. Approximately 50% of the law students at NIU receive financial assistance in the form of scholarships, research assistantships, and graduate assistantships. This assistance allows students to attend law school without the burden of taking out massive student loans. I currently hold a graduate assistantship that pays me a stipend and waives my entire out-of-state tuition.
