What activites are you involved in? During the 2012-2013 academic year I served on the board of the Black Law Student Association (BLSA) as the Community Relations Officer and as a member of the Public Interest Law Society’s Action Committee. Currently, I am a member of both organizations.

Have you taken part in any internships, externships, or assistantships, or other professional positions since starting law school? In the summer of 2012 I interned at the DuPage County Public Defender’s Office. Currently, I am interning at the Department of Justice Community Relations Service in Chicago. I have an immense passion for working on the ground level with community members affected by structural inequalities. To that end, I also work at Hesed House, a homeless shelter in Aurora where I co-run their legal clinic.

What do you like most about being at NIU Law? NIU Law offers a really great education without spending an enormous amount of money. In that regard, NIU Law provides students the opportunity to use their law degree in the manner they choose without the pressure of choosing a job that pays a particular amount of money. It’s a very refreshing and enjoyable way to begin any legal career.

The career opportunities office at NIU Law is also an invaluable resource. This office works extremely hard to place NIU Law students in prominent internships and jobs in Illinois and around the country. They have been a great help to me thus far.

This interview was conducted in Summer 2013.
