After the first year, the only required courses are Constitutional Law II (which must be taken in the third semester) and Professional Responsibility.
Students must also fulfill a writing requirement. Each student must take a three-hour seminar during his fourth or fifth semester and submit, as a requirement of that course, one or more written projects that demonstrate a capacity for meaningful legal research and an ability to express such research in written form. Typically, four or five research seminars are offered each semester. Offerings have included seminars in topics such as civil rights litigation, corporate governance, donative transfers, educational law, foreign and comparative law, environmental law, family law, gender issues in the law, Illinois constitutional law, immigration law, international business, medical malpractice, sports and entertainment law, and tax policy.
