A simulation skills course in which students act as clients who "hire" fellow students to be their lawyers. Students are graded on a taped initial interview with a client, with focus on both obtaining information and counseling the client effectively; pleadings, letters, motions, judgments, and any other written work in the court file; a taped negotiation session with opposing counsel; effectiveness in a court appearance, usually a prove-up; and the content of a separation agreement settling custody, support, and property division, or whatever of those can be settled without a contested hearing. Previous training and follow-up feedback are provided for each segment of the course, and students are given opportunities to discuss individual performance with the instructor regularly.
Prerequisite: Family Law (610)
This is an elective course. Most, though not all, electives are offered each year. Students may expect to have at least one opportunity to subscribe to all electives at some time in their three years in the college.
