Biography

Prior to joining NIU as a visiting professor in 2013, Justice O’Malley taught at the University of Chicago Law School. He has taught Illinois Civil Procedure, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Remedies, White Collar Crime, and Lawyering Skills.

Justice O’Malley attended college and law school (except 1L) while working as a Chicago police and tactical officer. After law school, he was appointed an assistant corporation counsel for the City of Chicago and worked as a litigator, primarily on federal civil rights cases. He then joined Chicago’s oldest law firm, Winston & Strawn, as an associate and then partner, where he was a corporate litigator. He subsequently served as vice president and general counsel for various subsidiaries of the General Electric Company.

He was twice elected State’s Attorney of Cook County, heading the second largest prosecutor’s office in the country. He also served ten years as a justice on the Illinois Appellate Court.

In addition to teaching, Justice O’Malley works as a mediator and as a consultant developing a new TV show, Chicago Justice, scheduled to premier in the fall of 2016 on NBC.
