FAQs for "This is What a Feminist Looks Like" Sticker Day

What is "This is What a Feminist Looks Like" Sticker Day?

"This is What a Feminist Looks Like" Sticker Day began at Northern Illinois University in March 2005. To kick off Women's History Month, we ask everyone on our campus to wear a sticker that says "This is What a Feminist Looks Like." The Center for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality makes and provides these stickers. By sponsoring this activity, we hope to draw attention to the many ways in which diverse people promote women’s rights; to demonstrate that the faces of feminism are as diverse as our nation; and to open up the definitions of the word “feminist” to more complicated meanings.

How do we make the stickers?

We create and print our own stickers on 2 1/2 inch round labels. These labels cost us approximately $12 for a pack of 300.

How do we publicize the event?

We publicize "This is What a Feminist Looks Like" Sticker Day in a number of ways. First, our center director sends a letter out to students, faculty, staff and friends of our center, and university administrators asking them to wear a sticker (see "Sticker Day Resources" to the right). We include the event on our Women's History Month poster/calendar that gets sent out to all of our students, faculty, staff and friends, and gets posted around campus. We use social media and send out email blasts about the event. We also post flyers around campus advertising the event, and we publish an ad in our school newspaper. If you can get other departments/organizations to co-sponsor the event, that's another great way to spread the word to more people!

How do we distribute the stickers?

We make the stickers available approximately 2 weeks prior to the event. We invite people to come to our office to pick up a FREE sticker. Co-sponsoring units also hand out stickers. We also carry them with us so when we're out around campus we can pass them out to anyone who wants one. We will mail them to anyone on campus who wants a sticker (campus mail). We also sell "This is What a Feminist Looks Like" buttons for $1 to raise money for programming and our scholarships.
