Bike Camp Free Hike Rock Snow Sports Volunteer Water 

Weekly Bike Ride with Outdoor Adventures 

Free Bike

Outdoor Adventures will be hosting free weekly bike rides again this fall. Come hang out with our awesome staff and meet some awesome new people! This ride is for all skill levels.  Don’t have a bike? The Adventure Center will loan you one of their rental Trek mountain bikes (first come, first serve). Come out for to find out about the local bike trails or come for a fun workout.

Date and time: Thursdays (Aug 27 - Oct 28), the group ride departs at 5:00 p.m. 

Crate Climb at NIU Student Recreation Center

Free Rock Sports

Stop by the Rec Center to experience what crate climbing is all about.  This challenging activity involves stacking and scaling crates as high as you can.  You are suited in a harness and belayed by an experienced Outdoor Adventure Leader.  How high can you climb without the crate tower toppling over?  Find out more about the Outdoor Adventures at these free special events.  There is a prize for the highest climber.

5th Annual Camp on Campus at NIU's West Lagoon 

Free Camp Sports Water

Connect, learn, and recreate with Outdoor Adventures this fall!  How does this sound: you and your new friends hanging out under the stars in the glow of a bonfire while enjoying roasted s’mores?  Sound appealing?  Then don’t miss the 5th Annual Camp on Campus event at the West Lagoon.  Free activities include sport games such as volleyball, slack-lining, Frisbee, bags, etc. and free workshops where you can get exposure to outdoor skills such as kayaking and canoeing, fire starting, outdoor cooking, stargazing, and more. Please register if you plan on attending.

We are currently at max capacity for camping equipment.  Please join us for the special event during the evening and/or bring your own camping equipment. 


National Public Lands Day "Clean the Kish" on the Kishwaukee River / DeKalb, IL 

Free Volunteer  Water

The Kish is an amazing river, from its humble beginnings in Woodstock IL, to its end where it feeds into the mighty Rock River. It provides a lot of recreation for residents of DeKalb from fishing to canoeing. The Kishwaukee River is also home to 28 endangered, threatened or watch-listed species. A river this important to DeKalb deserves some love. Please join us on National Public Lands Day on September 26 to help clean trash out of this community treasure. We will meet at the NIU East Lagoon and divide into river cleaning teams. After the cleanup enjoy a free BBQ back at the East Lagoon.

Volunteer Event at Afton Forest Preserve / DeKalb, IL 

Free Volunteer

Spend the day giving back to the community volunteering at Afton Forest Preserve. Located just south of campus, Afton Forest Preserve is a beautiful restored prairie and home to many of Illinois’ native plants and animals.  This is a great opportunity to help and learn about prairie restoration efforts! Please register if you would like transportation to and from the worksite from the Rec Center (up to 12 participants). If driving yourself please email to register and meet at the main parking area at Afton at 1:30 p.m.
