Dr. Betty Montgomery, the first Director of Campus Recreation, visited NIU on Friday, October 18, 2013. Under the guidance of Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Harry Canon, Dr. Montgomery created the recreation department in 1976. The department’s office was originally housed in the lower level of Neptune Hall North and the department used shared physical education and athletic facilities. As programs and services gained popularity, a dedicated student recreation center began construction in 1983 and opened in January of 1985. Dr. Montgomery toured the Student Recreation Center which experienced an expansion in 1995. She was pleased to see that we were able to do some painting and minor remodeling to maintain the facility. Dr. Montgomery also toured the New Hall and Gilbert Hall fitness rooms and the new Outdoor Recreation Sports Complex. Dr. Montgomery was impressed with the lighted Outdoor Complex and indicated that this had been a need when she was the Director.
